Mississippi State could also be compared to Purdue.
MSU all time record (.488)
Purdue all time record (.525)
Both engineering schools in forgotten states in their region. Purdue has to deal with Michigan and Ohio State. MSU has to deal with LSU and Bama.
Stadium capacities are within a few hundred.
Purdue has been to 17 bowl games, MSU has been to 18 bowl games. Mostly second tier bowl games. MSU has three Orange Bowl appearances. Purdue has two Rose Bowl appearances and a Citrus Bowl appearance. The rest: Sun, Alamo, Peach, Liberty, Music City, Gator type bowls.
MSU's outright SEC title came in 1941. Purdue's outright Big 10 title came in 1929.
Both have a history of having shitty quarterbacks. But both have had great seasons led by good quarterbacks. Drew Brees at Purdue and Dak Prescott at MSU.
One thing I learned that doesn't strengthen the argument but I found interesting as I was researching:
The Purdue "Spoilermakers"- Purdue has won more games against #1 teams than anyone except Oklahoma and Notre Dame. Seven wins vs. #1.

You had me until this comment. Griese, Dawson, Everett, Danielson? Purdue has even trademarked the name "Cradle of Quarterbacks".
ETA: The rest of the comparison is pretty good.

Look I like State but comparing their engineering program to Purdue is just sadly delusional and I think Indiana is a Top 20 state in population that has at least 3 major schools (Notre Dame + Purdue + Indiana) and now I must go shower for having to defend the state of Indiana.

Kentucky: Kansas. When does basketball season start?
I would say Kentucky would be Indiana
Kansas is well below UK in basketball domination at the NCAA's
North Carolina was not even a basketball state till Coach Case left Indiana to coach the Wolfpack of NC State. Tarheels basketball grew from that so their blood is not as blue as modern revisionist would have us believe.

Interesting you brought this up. I work in the Civil Engineering Department and we routinely do a specific type of pavement test that can only be conducted with equipment at MSU or Purdue. Not football related but mildly interesting.
