Would like to end up doing research and teaching theology/scholastic bible history so hopefully my job opportunities will be at least moderately okay once I get done

Academic jobs are hard to come by. Schools churn out many more PhDs than the job market can bear, especially in the liberal arts. Hope you aren't having to borrow money to get those degrees. But, who knows, maybe you'll be the next Indiana Jones.

During the Recession, I was in the process of applying to graduate schools to pursue a PhD in history, with a pretty specialized subject field. I loved it, was good at it, and had professors who agreed. But I had one professor in particular who point-blank told me not to do it. Said that I'd never pay my loans back.

Best advice I ever received.
