Didn't USC have a better win? over Alabama

But they had a far worse loss. Their loss was to an unranked conference opponent by almost two touchdowns. Alabama also had a much tougher schedule.

Alabama's first 5 opponents of the '78 season were as follows:

vs. #10 Nebraska
@ #11 Missouri
vs. #7 USC
vs. Vanderbilt
@ Washington

They also played #10 LSU in the second to last game of the regular season.

And then Alabama, ranked #2 in both major polls, beat #1 Penn State in post-season play.

USC also squeaked by Alabama in the Coaches Poll voting by the hair on their chinny-chin-chin. The AP vote the next day wasn't close at all.

The fact that Alabama played two Top 15 opponents in consecutive weeks, while USC played two cream puffs, might have contributed to Bama's poor play against USC in that game. 'Bama was tired after two physical games against good competition. USC was well-rested after playing the likes of unranked Texas Tech and unranked Oregon.

They weren't gonna have a repeat of what happened the year prior when ND (who lost to 5-6 Ole Miss) was #1 over Alabama (who lost to top 10 Nebraska).
