I think it will take another 50 years for racism to mostly be gone.
Disagree. Racism is not disappearing. It is changing. It is moving from the notion of "black skin = inferior" to "black skin = thug"
My niece is 5 years old and she does not like black people. When she sees them in public, she will shy away, and it is a challenge to get her to say hi to one. This is not because her parents or grandparents or siblings or teachers have taught her to not like them. Rather, it is because the black boys in her day care class act obnoxiously and rudely, more so compared to the other kids who are not black. Why they do that, who the frick knows? Most likely because they are being raised by a single parent with an absent father who shows up from time to time to provide a horrible influence - a harsh truth for the black community at large that some wish to ignore in discussions of the challenges that black Americans face. And as long as that is the case, sadly, there will be racism.
Like it or not, sometimes, stereotypes are earned.

I'm only in my 30's. And within my loving grandmothers' lifetimes, black people have been literally terrorized by whites. Men hung from trees, castrated, drug behind vehicles, churches bombed, dogs unleashed on them for no reason; hell, my mom had a white girl ask her when her class integrated in the 8th grade if black people had tails.
I said all that to say this: stop being so damned short sighted and look at the big picture. White folks have been at least as violent as blacks. Positive change takes time and more importantly education, something that has been and still continues to be denied to a good portion of black people. So maybe you should use the next opportunity with your niece to educate her that not all people who look alike are. Does it not upset you when outsiders stereotype Southerners? Is it fair? Have you done anything to earn that scorn?
