Honestly, there is one situation that was pretty much EXACTLY the same.
Isiah Thomas.
Like Avery, was a long time player and championship winning PG.
Like Avery, he coached two NBA teams, the Pacers and the Knicks.
Like Avery, he had a lot of success with his first NBA job and failed miserable at the second.
Like Avery, he never coached in college.
Like Avery, he surprised everyone and took a mid-level college coaching job.
Florida International, where he went 26-65 in three years.

Unlike Avery, if there was anyone not built for college it was Isiah. He is divisive, cause problems pretty much everywhere he goes and makes the majority of people hate him pretty quickly.
So, we'll see.
