Honestly, there is one situation that was pretty much EXACTLY the same.
Isiah Thomas.
Like Avery, was a long time player and championship winning PG.
Like Avery, he coached two NBA teams, the Pacers and the Knicks.
Like Avery, he had a lot of success with his first NBA job and failed miserable at the second.
Like Avery, he never coached in college.
Like Avery, he surprised everyone and took a mid-level college coaching job.
Florida International, where he went 26-65 in three years.
