Gruden cut his teeth in the college game. He had actually been on a college staff. Avery Johnson has never been on a college staff in any capacity.

Gruden spent a total of 4 seasons in college (1986-1989) and 2 of those were as a grad assistant. One year as a passing game coach and another as a WR coach. Neither at a Division 1A school, much less in a power conference.

But he learned the strains of the college game. In pro sports, it's all about that sport. That's what all of the time is spent on. In college, kids have classes to attend. The NCAA limits the number of hours that can be spent in practice. There is a HUGE difference....not to mention, in bball, the NBA game and the college game are two very different games.

Home Run Hire in Tuscaloosa. Avery Johnson's a friend that I covered while he played at Southern. Without CBB experience but connected.

Bill Battle clearly felt it was imperative to get a recognizable name. Avery's definitely that, and will do a great job. Congratulations.

No idea how Avery Johnson will do in W-L's, but he will say more to the media in his first 15 minutes than UA hoops has done in 6 years.
