This is the most reasonable explanation. Though Mars' interior dynamics have slowed tremendously as compared to Earth's, there is still enough activity to account for sudden out gassing as seen in the pics.

Notice the crater to the immediate lower right of the gassing crater. It appears to have experienced the same thing in the past.

It's a very cool pic.
