Chavis wanted his Defensive Lineman to anchor in place, play gap control, and allow the Linebackers to make the plays in his defense. His mantra was: We will defeat the run with numbers, and the pass with speed.

Chief loved to send pressure from the Secondary when blitzing on passing downs. He would give you exotic pre-snap looks at times. Example: Jerryworld, 2011 vs Oregon: Chief showed Double A-gap pressure pre-snap. It really befuddled Chip Kelly at Oregon; Chief saw on tape where Kelly's offense automatically checked the protection calls from the sideline when they read A-Gap pressure. Chief showed both interior LB which he knew would force the call (even if he guessed wrong on the A-Gap blitz) from the sideline. This really played tricks with the passing game they used, and it also got the Defense a breather as the check with me slowed down the Duck pace on their HUNH. It was truly a brilliant tactical decision on his part.

Mostly it was zone blitzing from the edge, and then late in the game he'll blitz off the edge over and over with some LB up the A-Gap stuff thrown in.

With Orgeron, I see LSU become more varied with technique. We'll still run gap control, but we'll also force double teams and shoot gaps. The interior tackles are going to be really influential with this. Early reports have Orgeron confident he can rotate 10 guys with the real depth being on the interior.

If those Defensive Tackles can impact the centers and guards on zone blocking schemes by slipping past the reach blocks and/or shooting the gap, then our Linebackers won't have to make as many plays as the DL will make some more as well.

This obviously means we'll see more pocket pressure from the Line compared to Chief.

I think we'll also see more blitzing off the edge and using the Linebackers because of some reports I've gotten about Steel's tendencies.

He's been working with some tweaks on responsibilities in the Secondary for the Safeties which tells me he's going to really depend on them to set coverage and read the offense pre-snap.

To answer the question, I think LSU will be truly special this year on Defense. Like Top 5 Nationally. Which may seem like another day at the office when you look back at the stats the past 10-12 years. But this year has a chance for the Tigers to be even better than normal.

You do know a gap control defense will ALWAYS command 1 double team, right?

Even against a zone scheme with track blocking.
