FOX just piggybacked off what Limbaugh had successfully done for years on the radio. Rush basically made the entire conservative media empire possible by carving out a niche on talk radio that exploded.

In order to make that happen, Rush first convinced his listeners that the mainstream media (I think he coined the term) leans left and couldn't be trusted.

I listened to Rush routinely during the Clinton years, especially at the height of the Hillarycare debate. That was his golden age. FOX News was born not too long after. They got rolling strong with the Lewinsky scandal.

I listen to very little talk radio or FOX News these days. Just pimping their wares to sell more product.

I don't think rush had to 'convince' his listeners of anything. I was young, but I still recall my parents complaining that all the news was very biased toward progressivism before Rush came along.

And when Rush stepped up, it was by no means a sure thing. Talk radio was a dead industry when he debuted. No one thought it was anything you could make money off of.

I like Rush a lot, can't stand to even listen to Hannity, and like Michael Berry more than any other. I spend a lot of time driving.

Fox and other 'conservative' news outlets give media a balance it didn't have before. The idea that news media somehow only became biased recently is revisionist history. The media has been biased toward liberalism for a solid 80 years, and before that the political divisions as they are today were unrecognizable. The only thing that has happened is that we now have other outlets such as Fox or the internet to compare to the NYT or NBC.

Amen. Our news media have been so biased [to the left] for so long that most Americans hadn't realized they were biased. You were born unto a bias. Your parents were born unto it. It didn't seem biased to most anyone. It was what it was. You naturally assumed it had ever been thus. Like you once assumed that people had forever done their shitting indoors.

Go back far enough and you'll find multiple newspapers in every substantial city, all of which were obviously biased, many of which openly referred to themselves as "Chicago's First Republican Newspaper" or "Boston's Finest Workers' News Source", etc. In the old days you chose and bought the paper you wanted to read, the one that reflected your politics, the one that fondled your fancy. Somehow or another the left prevailed. They snagged up ABC, NBC, and CBS. By the time America was getting most of its news from TV-- and using newspapers to line the birdcage-- the left had us where it wanted us. And few were the wiser.

In fact, about the only dudes who were screaming "Media Bias" in say 1960 were the crazy old coots tagged "nazi sympathizers" and "jingoes" and "grumps". The "haters" of their day. It being ABC, NBC, and CBS who were doing the tagging.
