Teaching cursive doesn't take too long, and you can learn it young.

IIRC we were made to work from a Handwriting textbook from the 3rd through the 5th grades. I'm sure it could be compacted, especially if expectations were lowered, but then why teach them to do it if in the first place if the quality of the product would be less than legible?

On an unrelated note: I was very happily surprised to learn from my 8 year-old last week that her 2nd Grade teacher had conducted a lesson on the difference between Wants and Needs. Since working in a convenience store when I was 19 I have been plagued by the realization that most Americans of ALL ages have a difficult time distinguishing the two.

Now I wish that Mrs. Smith would follow up with a lesson on Advertising. Teach them young that the cute cartoon rabbit on TV doesn't contribute anything to the flavor of the breakfast cereal. (How's that for radical?)

Not hard to learn but if you don't use it you ll lose it which is exactly what happened to me and many of my friends. I can sign my name and that's pretty much it
