Despite being just under three months removed from making his verbal commitment to in-state LSU, four-star Lafayette (La.) Northside defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin spent some time in Tuscaloosa this week working for an offer from Nick Saban and Alabama.
After showcasing his talent, the rising-junior learned of the news he was looking for on Tuesday evening.
"It was great, we went in his (Saban's) office, he talked to us about the programs at the school and how they give a lot of help in what we need," he said. "Then he offered me a scholarship to Alabama.
"It was great news, I have two more years and I'm thinking about my options."
Shelvin was able to work extensively with Crimson Tide defensive line coach Bo Davis while in town, picking up plenty in the process.
"They like my skills and my hard work," he said. "The show I put on for them got the offer. I gave 100 percent in everything we did in the camp and they liked it.
"The coaching impressed, and they helped on how to use our hands and more."
Attending camp last year without an offer to his name, Shelvin says he's improved "a lot" since the last time he was in Tuscaloosa. It was at that time when he began communicating with Davis.
"He's great," he said. "Ever since I got here he showed me everything I needed to know. He was the one who said Saban wanted to talk to me after the workout."
Still committed to Les Miles' Tigers, one of Louisiana's top underclassmen maintains that he'll still go through the recruiting process.
"I'm just waiting on my senior year for my options," Shelvin said. "I had a great time here."
