Put Dye up against Bryant, BUT give Auburn equal resources as well.
Ears had gone 0-10, 2-7-1, 2-7-1 the 3 years before Bryant got there. If Bryant had more resources than Pat Dye well then he worked for it cause he sure as hell didn't walk in to a good set up. Dye had the same opportunity. But there was only one Bear Bryant.

Phil Snow: Would you rather not have a guy as close as Pat is to you be the coach at Auburn?
Bear Bryant: Yeah, I’d rather he wouldn’t be the coach at Auburn.
Snow: Why is that, coach?
Bryant: Because he’s a friend of mine. I want him to continue to be a friend of mine, but it’s difficult to be as close as ones like we were and be cross state rivals. And I don’t want those Auburn people ruining him anyway.
Snow: Did you try to talk him out of taking the job?
Bryant: No, I didn’t try to talk him out… we talked before he was ever offered the job, before he was ever interviewed. I let him I know I didn’t think he should be goin’ down there I think. He didn’t pay any attention to me, naturally.
Dye has indicated several times that Bryant told him that he would be the next Alabama coach. Pat Dye did not think that would happen.
It is not Dye's fault that Bryant went out on a losing note in the Iron Bowl.

My point was that Shug and Barfield never got the support from Montgomery that Bryant and Alabama did. Deck was always stacked against AU during that time.
