Actually we reinforced it by playing each other in the regular season. What we proved in the bowl season is the lower tier bowls have weaker competition.

You played and lost to a Notre Dame team on a 6 game losing streak.
Mississippi State played and was blown out by a 3 loss Tech team we took to double overtime.
Auburn (a team we completely abused) lost to a Wisconsin team that didn't score a point in it's conference championship game.
Ole Miss and Bama played the only "superior" competition, and ole miss had to kick a mercy field goal in the fourth quarter to avoid the shutout.
So, uh, GTFO.
