This was really about Dan Franklin and the shitty way he called recruits that he recruited at Vandy. He called guys that had already committed to him at Vandy and tried to get then switched to Penn St. I seem to recall a few switched. He screwed Vandy after they gave him a shot.

Franklin isn't a nice guy but I think this is over the top.

We want to believe recruits commit to programs, but in reality they commit to coaches. Thanks to Franklin Vandy was recruiting at a level they never could before. He rolled the joint so it was his to smoke.

Vandy could have fought back. They could have matched PSU's offer- what else do they do with all that SEC money? Or they could have spent the money to hire a replacement that was more exciting than wet shite in a bag. Or they could have put money into SEC-level facilities to give the recruits a reason to follow the program and not the man.

Instead Vandy stood there like a working class guy who won $10,000 in a scratch off and wasted it all in a single weekend with hookers and blow. Party was over, their 15 minutes was done, their window had closed, and so they shut off the lights and moved onto baseball. Only Clayton Williams would be proud of their plan.

Real SEC football programs don't do that. They don't get smart with their program and fold back when the odds suck. They throw everything they can at the problem praying something will stick, because in the modern college football world sometimes a gimmick (Oregon) and the right coaching hire (Ohio St.) is what separates the elite from the less than average.

Plus Vandy didn't "give him a shot" like it was a favor. Vandy needed a sacrificial lamb head coach and he happened to be it for a while. He doesn't owe them anything for his hiring after the results he gave. He was their "once in twenty years" bright spot (yes like our JFF) and they blew all the momentum he created.
