But the inclusion of the Les Miles clause in Chavis' contract extension wasn't a failure to buy the most expensive guy. From what I've read, it was the clause that opened the door for A&M. That and later the fact that the reworked offer, which did not include the clause, was for only two years. LSU may have been mediocre by their standards the past three seasons, but they largely HAVE that standard thanks to the job Chavis has done on the defensive side of the ball.

My point isn't that I think LSU is doing a Scrooge impersonation because they're unwilling to pay to win. I think they're trying to control costs in anticipation of buying out Miles' contract in a couple of years. I mean, Kevin Steele seems to be a legit candidate for the job. How is that possible if LSU is actually looking for a long-term solution at DC?
