and apparent miserliness in searching for his replacement

For all the hand-wringing around here for the last bit, we had the same record as LSU this year and we've had the same record over the last 3 years - and during that period LSU has had the highest paid staff in the nation.

At some point, you can't just buy the most expensive guy. Les spent 1.3m on Cam. Another 650k on Wilson. And including him 7 of his 10 coaches are offensive. And they put out a putrid product this year. If 3 years from now we go 8-5 again with a 100 level defense, Sumlin best not ask for more money to make a great hire.

Les has 1.3m to rework his staff. That's hardly miserly. He just has money tied up in all the wrong people which is his own damn fault

But the inclusion of the Les Miles clause in Chavis' contract extension wasn't a failure to buy the most expensive guy. From what I've read, it was the clause that opened the door for A&M. That and later the fact that the reworked offer, which did not include the clause, was for only two years. LSU may have been mediocre by their standards the past three seasons, but they largely HAVE that standard thanks to the job Chavis has done on the defensive side of the ball.

My point isn't that I think LSU is doing a Scrooge impersonation because they're unwilling to pay to win. I think they're trying to control costs in anticipation of buying out Miles' contract in a couple of years. I mean, Kevin Steele seems to be a legit candidate for the job. How is that possible if LSU is actually looking for a long-term solution at DC?
