I don't really buy into that for non-journalists. If you're talking to a friend of some sort who's in position to know and tells you something, but that friend would have a problem with you posting what they told you on the internet, then you are kinda already betraying their confidence by doing so. Not saying where you heard it from doesn't undo the damage of putting that information out into the public eye.

I've heard plenty of rumors over the years and none of my friends would give a damn if I say where I got them from. For example, here are some juicy ones.

One of my friends in CoMo had a roommate who was friends with former 1980s Mizzou basketball player Mark Dressler. Among other things, he told me that according to Dressler, Norm Stewart used the "N" word to describe black people during practices all the time. Now you can believe that or not, I don't really know either, but I've told you exactly where I heard it.

I have another close friend from Columbia who told me he had a friend in the athletic department who was saying that the Quin hooking up with Linas Klieza's girlfriend rumors were in fact happening, and said something about an encounter between them actually happening in the coach's offices. Again, I don't know how much stock to put in that chatter, but that's the chain of exactly where I heard it.

And so on. It's not the end of the world for the people who relayed that to my friends and I don't think there's any sort of cloak and dagger, Watergate type stuff that goes into hearing rumors. You heard something? Tell me where you got it from. Otherwise I have no level of credibility to attach to the rumor.
