I am not saying Ford would be an "elite" CB but just pointing out that while he fugged up on this play it is unlikely that the outcome would have changed
Not saying Whitehead didn't make the right call. I'm just saying that This play was designed to attack the boundary safety and with Cooper it is an almost surefire TD even if Ford played that properly. It was a beautiful play call to take advantage.
This is a coaching issue + you are taking this play out of the context of the game. At this point in the game, Alabama had thrown about 5-6 passes to teh boundary while attempting 0 deep passes over the middles and only 1 intermediate post pattern for about 10-15 yds.
Ford bit on what he had seen all day and the route Cooper was running all day.
That was a pretty aggressive move by Cooper and the mistake is only so evident due to his ability.
No but on a designed route to attack the seam between deep 2nds on the field does. Even if Ford played it right, the lack of a jam means that Amari Cooper was going to be on the inside unless Ford sold out on the post. Cooper is too fast and good to not get that. With White taking Whitehead and THerezie with him on his route, Cooper has Ford on an Island with 20 yards of free space in front.
Not too many CBs or S that I would take in that situation to make a play.
Only reason Ford would have had a chace on this play was it was a shitty ball.

I'm not sure why you keeping bringing Whitehead into this because he did his job as the field safety in a Cover 2.

He should have used the boundary as another defender instead of trying to jump the out/curl/corner route

Now some people think he's good enough to be on an island by himself when a simple fake made him look like a fool.

So a DB needs help on every deep pass?

Cover 2 - he can't bite on that. Better to give up the deep out then to get smoked on the bomb. Horrible coverage to leave Cooper one on one with a safety. I would agree that someone else was also out of position because Ford didn't have any help. However, he was breaking way too quickly. Dude got smoked.
