I'll be lambasted for this, but I don't think that athletics should have anything to do with academia. That's a tough sell, considering the long history in America, but it's pretty fricking retarded to run athletic departments at a loss. Club style sports, as in some parts of Europe, would ensure that the market dictates what can survive.

Depends. It's hard to step back from what collegiate athletics has become and view how unsuccessful (or unproductive) athletic programs may add to the fabric of an institution. Honestly, I have trouble doing it even in an abstract sense. We're that far removed from days when athletic programs were integral parts of the school accessible to all/most students, at least at large schools, I mean.
