Not from the last time I was there a few months ago. The strip of bars and clubs on Gervais street are all fine as far as I've noticed, but there are some ones that are on the Vista's periphery (like Lucky 13) that are shady as hell.

I really wish I could remember the name because now it sounds like a load of bull but I partied pretty hard my last weekend in Cola, there are a couple of bars that stay open past 2am in 5 points and the Vista, we went to one on the very edges of the Vista that I had never heard of at like 3:30-4:00. It was the most run down and sketchy bar I've ever been to. Had fun though.

There are more seedy parts of 5 points than non-seedy these days.

Vista is still nice for the most part but like GarnetWay said, some of the bars like this one on the outskirts are sketcky

Was it Kelly's? I think it's on Lady St. Either there or the Woody which is down and alley past Saki Tumi.

I remember that place.

There was also State St Pub in Cayce, when it was a private club.

That place was awesome, for late night. I played a game of pool against Sony from Hootie there once. $1 Rolling Rocks.

BarNone still goes till sunrise. Moosehead Saloon in 5 points also goes until about 4.

Not sure about your other question. I honestly can't remember. I had to look up Moosehead's to remember the name, could only use google because I remember it having a mechanical bull.

As you can imagine, any bar that I only tend to hop in and out past 2am is a bit of a blur.

To be fair, that bar has changed names just about every year since I was a freshman in 2009

I haven't been to 5P, except for Pawleys and Jakes since about 2010. Class of 07, so I try to stick to the Vista these days. BarNone was the place to go late night. Used to see many of our fine state legislators in there on numerous occasions chasing skirts.

Back in my day all the seedy bars in town were either over on Rosewood or out by the airport.

The first one that was really considered seedy that popped-up in 5 Pts was during my grad school days, Group Therapy. It was a seedy little hole in the wall back then - '78 I think it was. Maybe late '77. It was there my last year at Carolina.

When I got home from Europe in the mid 80s I stopped by for a visit and it was still a small little place. It's much bigger now. But 5 pts has really gone in a different direction, in terms of nightlife, since those days.

I personally still visit Delaney's regularly because I like the fresh Guinness on tap and I like the bartender down there, Abby.

Was Lucky 13 the one over on Lady Street in the old Acme Distributing, PBR and Schlitz warehouse? I used to know the owner of Acme back in the day, Ralph Broom. He was a few years older than me but we used to hunt together back in the early 70s. I think Ralph still owns that building although he sold-out the distributorship to Lee probably two or three decades ago.

The problem with bars in Columbia is that they are so dependent on legal age students - most of them don't last long and they usually struggle during their open years. There are some exceptions, those who are smart and save their big money months to make it through the slow money months - but there are only a handful of long-running successful bars in any college town really.

I was a freshmen in 2008.. I was recently in 5points for Homecoming and the place is completely different to me, so I can only imagine what it looks like to you.

5points has always been full of seedy (but fun) bars... but now it has earned a sketchy rep too.. It was really bad out there towards the end of my undergrad years, around 2011/2012. I remember spending summers in Cola for work and internships, going down to 5points and having a good time. Summers in Cola are pretty sketch in general but 5points was always fun and less crowded... Just be gone as soon as the bars closed.

A lot of the places that were really cool during my undergrad years are either gone now or cater to a new clientele. I wasn't greek but I wasn't a hipster either.. I got along with everybody, that's how you have fun in college... getting to know everybody.

Sharkey's, really cool around 2011/2012 is shite now, so is RedHots or whatever it's called now..
BarNone is still cool for late night grub, when you're trying to regain yourself before going home.
Group Therapy is pretty hipster but I like it. Girls dance there, A LOT. That's fun.
ParrotHeads (wrong name, I know) is still the underaged bar.. I've been going there since freshmen year... without a fake. It's a nice, girls dancing on tables kinda bar..
My bar was always PourHouse... I spent SO much time there. Fond memories. Pourhouse is best during the summer.
Delaney's holds a special place in my heart.. I turned 21 in that bar. Entire place bought me drinks the whole night.
Goodtimes left around 2009 or so but it was legendary.. First bar I threw up in.
Pavs is still Pavs, fratastic... but my friends are in frats so I would always go with them.
Bey's is gone (forgot it's current name, it's over by Pops Pizza).. that place always smelled weird but had weirdly awesome DJs, music and open mic nights. That place was THE hipster bar when I was a student. There's a bar next to it that has a new name every time I go back to Columbia.. That bar is pretty fun too.
Saloon is okay, not really my style but I would always meet up with girls there.
Village is still Village Idiot..
Moosehead is fun.. definitely a hidden gem. Dark and Danky.. kind of doing it's own thing. Lots of students don't know about it.

FIFY (not necessarily a bad thing)

I always preferred Group. I'm not a hipster and I'm surprised it has that reputation. Yeah it doesn't really have a lot of the "Greek types" but I always found it a good mix of people, like me, who weren't at one side of the obvious clique scale or the other.

Went there once and never again. I am not a Greek and I felt so out of place in just a shirt and blue jeans. I've never seen a crowd where every guy there had on a dress shirt, shorts, and sandals and / or sperrys on.

I used to go to Bey's a lot because I had plenty of the "scene / hipster" crowd type friends, but as you mentioned it shut down and has been replaced.

Before I moved I started frequenting the Vista more for no other reason than just to check out some different bars.

Social is always good if you're looking for a more club atmosphere, lots of dancing, real loud of course.

Tin Roof is great, really good live music but I hate the cover charge (have to get in there before 10 to avoid it though)

Does anyone remember Chubby's in 5 Points from around 2005-2008? Tuesday night $2 doubles were amazing. It was in the same strip as Pops, Beys, etc.

Your right.. I use the term hipster loosely. Group always has a good mix of people. Still does.. I visit sometimes when I'm in town and make my way to 5points. I like that it has an older mid to late 20's/grad student vibe... so I don't feel like I'm partying with a bunch of kids.

I moved from Columbia back in Summer 2013.. I spent that entire summer going to the Vista, and especially to Social. It's a really cool spot... something Columbia needs more of. There's really no other place in Columbia like that right now. Blue is a pretty cool lounge-type bar as well.. it's on one of those side streets in the Vista.

I went to Tin Roof for the first time during Homecoming weekend and I had a blast... I can't believe I didn't go there at all during undergrad. So much fun.

I faintly remember Chubby's... don't know why, maybe it's from seeing the sign out front or something. I don't remember going there, but then again, I don't remember a lot of what I've done out there after 1am..

Haha, how ironic.... My black arse won't be going there anytime soon. They did that on purpose!
