Spurrier says he will return next year

Spurrier, who is in his 10th season with the Gamecocks (6-6), had previously stated publicly that "the plan" was to be back, but never said unequivocally he would return for his 11th season.
Until Monday when he went on the record in this report.
“Give me two or three more (years),” Spurrier told The State. “I used to say four or five, now I’m down to two or three. I mean, I could get in a car wreck, but I’m definitely planning on being back.”
Spurrier is 83-45 during his tenure at South Carolina.

I'm actually sort of relieved to read that - but now let's hope he is willing to make some tough decisions where some of his staff are concerned.
This is very very important - we're being left-behind in the arms race that is beefing-up staffs during the off-season.

If he only coaches 2 more years I really hope Jim McElwain is still at CSU. Leave him alone Florida, you can have Hugh Freeze.

I think it's pretty interesting that we're in a better position to get a top name HC than Nebraska. I looked at their hot list on 247 and it's complete shite.

Likewise. It was a rough year, and it looks like we're going to have to rely on that big recruiting class coming in. If Spurrier left after a 6-6 season the wheels could come off.

If Spurrier is not going to clean out this defensive staff I would rather him retire. I say that knowing that he has not called the plays in the last three games nor the Kentucky game. I want Spurrier here to call the plays and make the tough decisions. If he won't do either I would want him to retire.
Just so I don't get flamed I love Spurrier and am very appreciative for wher he has taken this program.

I think we are all pissed abouth this entire season, especially after all of the hype heading into it. I can't say I disagree with anything you gave said, I think he needs to clean house as well. Last season the defense started out pretty flat, but improved. This year they sucked, and kept sucking...... I dunno if any of you heard what one of the commentators said about Lorenzo Ward during the USA game, but he said they had changed practice that week to playing assignments instead of seeing how many plays they could run without being worn out....

I'm not a coach, but shouldn't it be the other way around? Once you learn assignments then you work on stamina? I dunno. Hopefully the D-line has help on the way whether there is a change at DC or not. They're horrible...

Nebraska is a hard place to coach. You're expected to win at a really high level without a high level of high school talent in the state. I think Nebraska fans will eventually regret firing Pelini.

Well ... the rest of the piece is out now.
Spurrier says he's not firing any coaches and he expects them to all return.
Said there may be some rearranging of the staff, but he expects all of his coaches to return for another year.
We're screwed.

Eh, unless he is announcing someone is fired I would expect him to say everyone is staying.
Plus he said that some of the staff could leave to take other jobs right? Maybe he will encourage some to seek jobs elsewhere

If no one on this defensive staff is let go then that is very disappointing. It is also scary to think of the snowball effect that could happen with another bad year next year.

I dunno ... I suppose anything is possible.
I know this from experience. The older you get the less likely you are to make big firing decisions unless you absolutely have to. Call it mellowing, call it loyalty, whatever, but you start giving people a lot more rope than you did as a decision maker when you are younger because you want to believe in people more, and their ability to turn it around if given a chance.
It rarely ends well. Before I sold my company I tried hanging-on to two men I should have let go and ... well, the old saying, "no good deed goes unpunished" came back and bit me in the arse.
I just hope Spurrier knows what he is doing.
I get it, I do. I understand he is weighing all his options and he honestly does believe that this next class is going to be exceptional - and he fears losing that class if he cans Whammy. I just hope all the prospects currently committed feel the same sense of loyalty to us that Spurrier is showing Whammy.
I guess time will tell.
