I think the reason is that 3 years ago he wasn't a hot name. He was a Dantonio protege (as was Snyder fyi) and he had had his struggles early on at Mich State as they transitioned. Sumlin called him as he was just emerging as a trendy name in 2012. There was reason for him to move then to get out from Dantonio's shadow and to get better exposure for himself.

Since then MSU has been tremendous, particularly on defense, and people know who he is. He's widely rumored for a number of head jobs. There's almost no chance he's moving to a lateral job. It really does nothing to benefit him as his next job is almost certainly going to be a head coaching position.
