Yea one of my aunts used to make mince meat pie every Christmas and though I hated it as a kid it was actually pretty dam good.
Maybe he refers to Shepards or Hair, two other very fine pies!

Shepherd's pie is an Irish thing... don't think it's necessarily midwest. I lived above an Irish bar for a year, was a pretty tasty meal.
