Yardage of leading rusher

2014: Trey Williams - 474 (Carson had 448)
2013: Johnny Manziel - 759 (Malena had 551)
2012: Johnny Manziel - 1410 (Malena had 808)
2011: Cyrus Gray - 1045 (Michael had 899)
2010: Cyrus Gray - 1133 (Michael had 631)
2009: Christine Michael - 844 (Gray had 757)
2008: Mike Goodson - 406 (Gray had 363)

If your leading rusher has less than 500 yards at the end of the season that should be grounds for termination if you're an offensive coordinator.

These backs could be just as good as Michael gray and malena. Spav and McKinney and bj need to step up their games, it's embarrassing

Trey had 6.8 YPC this year. Brandon might have gotten butthurt but IMO this should've been a two-back rotation with Tra in for the change of pace / short yardage situations. Maybe let Brandon take Trey's place alongside Speedy on returns to make up the touches.

EDIT: His statlines from our three closest losses this year

@MSU 4/53, 13.3 ypc
vMIZ 4/35, 8.8 ypc
vLSU 4/62, 15.5 ypc, 1 TD

Why you give him only four attempts in any of those games I can't imagine.

Yea I didnt care for the way the RBs were rotated either. BW danced too much and seemed to string out his runs far too often instead of just picking a hole and going. I also would hsve preferred more Trey/Tra as they were far more consistent with their runs. I've done nothing to actually go back to see if its true or not but I do wonder if the rotation may have tipped our hand on what all plays were coming.

I don't think so. We didn't much change the offense and really the rotation just limited what we could do well. None of our RBs are complete running backs.

BW is atrocious is short yardage situation because he dances too much and goes down on contact. So even when he's running well, you need to sub him in 3rd and short situations (see Mizzou)

TW won't give much effort in pass protection. I've always wanted to cut him some slack because he's such a talented player with the ball in his hands but in each of the last two games he made horrible gaffes at big moments in pass pro that had more to do with effort than ability. That forces you to sub him out in definite passing situations.

TC is probably the most complete back but he's just not exciting and isn't much of a threat running outside.

Everyone seems frustrated with how the backs were utilized and it's understandable. I think the personalities and an effort to keep them all happy has led to poor production. But the loss of Malena was soooo understated. I think for the most part, this set of backs is talented but they haven't embraced the offense and it shows. There are a ton of far less talented backs that have excelled in this offense. Malena being just such a guy as he gave maximum effort in everything he was asked to do.

This brings up a LOT of schematic and personnel questions:

1. Trey Williams has never scored a TD on a reception or a return. Why not put him in the slot, then, in a 4-5 WR set, motion him into the backfield to get a handoff?

2. Why not move Ricky Seals-Jones to Tight End? He's more of a threat over the middle than anything else. Is he that poor of a blocker that he's worse than Clear or Alexander? This way you can have 3-4 other receivers there with him.

3. Why did we not see more of James White? He's probably the most complete back on the roster and was HORRIBLY underutilized.

4. Why can't we make our offense more like the Baylor/Auburn spread and less like the Washington State/Texas Tech spread?

5. Why do we never have 2 running backs in the same formation?

I don’t see how any of those questions are brought up by my post. I’ll oblige I guess but it’s a weird non-sequitur.

1. He’s not a very good receiver and it wouldn’t fool anyone

2. RSJ is not a threat over the middle of any sort. I think right now we’re struggling on figuring out how to use him. He has had real trouble catching the ball in traffic and no he’s not a particularly adept blocker (he’s too tall and plays like a tall guy). He was benched at H vs LSU after dropping an easy catch (and failing to gain a yard vs a guy half his size). Personally I'd give strong consideration in moving him to X (and putting Speedy at H)

3. I dunno and agree with you. I said before the LSU game I’d have him starting

4. Baylor is a derivative of the Air Raid. And Auburn is a derivative of the veer. About the only things they have in common are an affinity for deep passes (which we've had too over the last 3 years). Conceptually they are polar opposites. So I have no idea what you are asking.

5. We don’t need more guys on the field that are only good when they have the ball because only 1 can have the ball. We quite often had 2 backs with Compton being one because he’s an elite blocker.
