The squib is a common way to avoid big returns. It's not a bad call. The defense didn't stop the QB run like they should have, and then GT had a great kick.

No, it was a bad call. Horribly bad actually. We have great coverage teams and were only up by 3. Terrible terrible call that cost us the game.

I wouldn't go that far ... bad call ... I would have kicked it deep, but to say it cost us the game ... nah ... it was a combination of things.

I strongly disagree. The squib is the go-to play in that situation every time.

It is designed to force the slower players to recover the ball, taking the ball out of the hands of the fastest returners. It also (usually) knocks extra seconds off the clock, since it can't be a "touchback".

Tech's entire defense is predicated on the run. They are great at eating clock, but not great at big plays with little time left on the clock. Their kicker's long was about 10 yards shorter than the one he got today, so GT would've needed to pick up about 30 yards in that case.

The safe call was the pooch kick, and, again, If they had kicked it deep and the returner scored a TD, everyone would be calling for CMR's head for not doing the textbook pooch kick.
