Then they should have had a problem with the specific individuals and how they acted, and just kept their mouths shut about it being because they're gay. If they had a legitimate reason to not want to do business with them, then that's their prerogative, and if they swore on the Bible in a court of law it wasn't because they were gay, then they wouldn't pay a fine. And even if it's their private property, it's available for public commerce. If you run a bed and breakfast on your property, you can't refuse patrons a room simply because they are black.

Look, it is about their rights as a property owner.
They should be able to make any decision they choose about what happens there, as long as it doesn't endanger the physical safety of other people.

I don't care what you do on your place, why wouldn't you grant me the same respect?
