Anyone else watch the game last night?
Delta State had a player that I would love to have on our team. I think his name was Schmidt #23. You always wonder what the story is when you see a player that good in DII or even DIII.
I liked what I saw for the most part. The 30-second shot clock kept things moving pretty good. They aren't going to use it this year, but I would give it a thumbs up.
I like having all of the bodies that we have. That is a nice change.
The frosh get a thumbs up as well. I thought they are all going to be solid contributors.
I was trying to think of a team that compared to what I saw last night, and it was kind of difficult. I think we are kind of like Richard Williams' early teams. We are a pretty good team that could flip from average to really good with one star player. We'll know more when we play a few games and Chicken hits the floor.

When is Sword supposed to be back?

Sword will be ready for game one, but Ray said that he would probably err on the side of caution with him. Sit him game one, play him game two, start him game three.
Sounds prudent to me. Truthfully, I don't even know who we are playing in games 1, 2, and 3. I didn't even know we were playing last night until about 4. I got a call from a guy that wanted me to go to the game with him.

We play Utah State early. They smoked us last year, so I guess that could give us some sort of gauge on where we are.

So outside of Chicken, since he will be back momentarily, the only injury we have is IJ Ready?
We all know what we have in Sword. Thomas is an outstanding defensive player that has a streaky 3 point shot. Gavin Ware has improved tremendously. If he can consistently hit that 15-18 ft jumper he was hitting last night he will be All-SEC. We know by this point who Bloodman and Roq are going to be. Good hustle guys.
For the others:
Demetrius Houston looks like he's going to be a bad arse eventually. He still looks like one of our best players as a Freshman. Side note on Houston, Bloodman threw him an oop last night that was waaayyyy to high. Houston went up and got it and laid it in, hitting his head on the rubber side of the backboard.
I'm not exactly sure what we're getting in Dunlap. He looked pretty small out there last night, but all reports indicate he is an excellent shooter. Remains to be seen, but we need that desperately on this team.
Travis Daniels looks pretty good. He had 6? points and 8 rebounds last night. He's going to be good, just got to get back in the swing of playing the game instead of practicing for a year.
Oliver Black looked pretty good in the post last night. He's going to be good at the 4, and can use both hands extremely well for a bigger guy.
Ndoye is the wildcard. He looks extremely talented. Last night he scored I think 12 points, had 3 blocks and 6 rebounds or there about. He has a good jump shot, can use both hands, and has a pretty solid hook shot. The thing that worries me about him is that he is listed at 6'11" 210 lbs. He looks that skinny too. Should be fun to watch him progress though.
Overall:
There are several things that are encouraging to see out there. One of the two biggest things to me was that our team averages 6'8" tall. That is something you can't coach and much better than the last two years. The other thing was when we subbed last night, a brand new 5 came on the floor and there was little to no drop off. That is refreshing after watching 6 players and a walk on play our games the last two years.
I think we're going to be a lot better than people think this year. Our defense is going to take us as far as we go. I'm a little worried about our offense, but it should come around as the season goes along, the majority of the team being new guys just need a chance to gel. Chicken coming back will also help there tremendously.
Altogether I am very encouraged watching this team play. What needs to happen is the fans need to get involved. The lack of support from the fans last year was embarrassing. If we could create an atmosphere like the Hump of old I think it would help this young team a ton.

Nope. Zuppardo already out for the year. That was a pretty key injury

I liked that we made our free throws, missing FT's was one of my biggest complaints the past two years.
I'm afraid that good teams will force us to shoot from the perimeter, not sure how we haven't found some guys to shoot the long ball.

IDK about his loss being key. We looked pretty solid at the 4 and 5. The Zuppardo loss last year would have been terrible. This year, it is much less of a blow to the team.
There were some really good basketball moves by the bigs last night that ended up with tough misses.
If Chicken can get to the basket the way he usually does, these guys will get a lot of opportunities to finish plays.

Yeah I honestly don't think he would have played much this year. We're fine in the post. What we need is a point guard.

So sounds like Ndoye > Reik ??

No contest. Reik looked like a baby giraffe out there.
