We had something like that too. They called it "The Ugly Sweater" and I believe they gave a bunch of them away. E.G. UT is giving away "Ugly Sweaters" at X and X event. It must be a hipster thing - I could see it appealing to hipsters and college kids as a 'so ugly they're cool' kinda way and I think that was the marketing angle since ours are called "Ugly Sweaters."
