It depends on the type of defensive mindset the coordinator has. Some coordinators may argue the exact opposite. If your line can create disruption, it will lead to hurry-ups and off balance throws, which can help the secondary.

That's fine and I concur, but which is more likely in the short-term (and so should be the priority)? Getting 4 in place who can help, or 7?

I say hire a DC whose specialty is the secondary. Recruit like crazy for all 11 positions obviously, but get the DB's on track ASAP.

I forgot who, but someone was arguing here that the next DC should also be in charge of the Linebackers due to seeing a historical correlation of good teams having a DC also coaching LB. And looking around the NCAA, this myth does carry some truth to it.

All I know is that this bend but don't break defense mentality is not the way to go. With the offense that we have (or are supposed to have ), our team should always expect for opponents to open up their playbook and go full steam on us. Not strategically good since we are expected to give up shortyard plays and in exchange we should theoretically prevent huge plays (see how well thats working for us at the end ). My personal belief is that a good defense is a confident defense and we can't build confidence if we allow our defense to bend.

Dominant teams are built from the line out. If we want to Dominate we need to have maulers and attackers on both lines and then the backs and Linebackers need to be aggressive downhill players and then the receivers and secondary need to be fast ball playing guys. It all starts with the lines though. Without good to great play from them all schemes breakdown.
