In short, LSU-UM was no big deal to anyone anywhere for decades (roughly up to 1957), then a very big deal for about 15 years (roughly from about 1958-73), and lastly a big deal only to the two schools involved because of the bad blood from the previous 15 years (roughly from about 1974-onward).

I wasn't around then, but that sounds about right.

-In 58 LSU went undefeated and won the NC

-1959 was the Billy Cannon run that messed up Ole Miss' perfect season and possible AP Poll Championship (and then they beat LSU 21-0 in the Sugar Bowl). That Ole Miss team only gave up 21 points for the whole season.

-In 1960, a 1-4 LSU team tied what would end up being a 10-0-1 Ole Miss team in Oxford. LSU won out after that.

-In 1961, LSU beat what was an undefeated Ole Miss team in Baton Rouge.

-In 1962, Ole Miss went undefeated.
