I can remember Lincoln had a car back then with a similar roof line in the back. The rear window would come down (electrically). The commercial for the car had Arnold Palmer using probably a pitching wedge to hit a golf ball into the car through the rear window. Took them only a year or two I think to realize the rear window coming down really served no useful purpose.

Yes, it served a useful purpose, most cars then had no air conditioning, only fresh-air vents. Allowing the air to waft through unimpeded kept people cool. Other cars of that era had small louvers on the back that did the same thing... marketed as "flow-through" or natura-air" or something.
