Those games were more of an effort for Bama's backwards redneck fanbase and boosters to allow Bryant to sign black players.

He had been recruiting them for years, usually helping place them in school's up north far away from Bama's schedule.

Don't kid yourself, Dale; we were all redneck and backwards as shite in the 50s and 60s, but you're correct save for one point: He would have been going up against the political establishment more so than the fans and boosters.

I won't argue this. Bryant was every bit as shrewd as he was a skilled coach.
