The Coaches Poll was contractually obligated to vote whichever team won the game designated as the NC game #1 in their final poll. Three coaches did violate this and voted for USC over LSU.
The AP was free to vote whoever they wanted to as #1, and they can still do that even with the playoff.

Louisiana state held the coaches pole and USC wonthe AP title. Split champions.
