I saw some blow back on twitter from the, "you're stereotyping southerners" crowd re: this but I've come to think of it in the same light as women who wear big hats to the Kentucky Derby. It's part of the tradition and pageantry

Sometime we over-think things instead of just enjoying them for what they are

Yep.

I mean, kids at Alabama, Auburn and Ole Miss all dress very similarily. Pledges all wear coats and ties, actives generally wear khakis and some wear ties and others polo shirts, non greeks wear polos or t-shirts. Pretty much mirror images.

All of my ole miss friends/family just think of the grove as a fun place to tailgate. And that's what it is. I have never known anyone to try and push some sort of magic upon it.
