What he overlooks is the fact that Roman society was not remotely "racist" by today's definitions. You were a Roman citizen, or you were not a Roman citizen. Non-Romans did not fare well, regardless of skin color. Non-citizens who attained Roman citizenship did quite well, regardless of skin color.
