Last year's record is the most telling metric in how good a team will be this year. Sort of like how Auburn went 3-9 in 2012 and 11-1 the next year.

Plus preseason rankings are based on the previous year and that's why teams are ranked where they are. There is still no good reason to put Bama ahead of FSU. They've beaten a ranked team.
