Southern Miss has to be irrelevant

This is no longer required.

Our budgets dwarf theirs.

But it had to happen. As long as USM was competitive and going to New Orleans Bowls and Hawaii Bowls, they were an option for some recruits. Guys like Alford who would had the talent would have to work hard to break the 2 deep at State or Ole Miss, and he could be the BMOC in Hattiesburg.

Alabama and Auburn don't have that problem. Sure, some of their smaller colleges are competitive, but I highly doubt someone says "Starting at South Alabama is better than sitting the bench at Alabama or Auburn."

Players in the state of Mississippi have to grow up cheering for State or Ole Miss. If we lose a big time in-state recruit, I'd rather them go to Ole Miss than Alabama or LSU. Ole Miss fans need to see it the same way. We have to build a generation of Bulldogs and Rebels, not a bunch of "me" guys that ride the bandwagon of whatever team is doing well.
