You worded it correctly as to how you feel....but I have always been of the opinion that the National Champion should also be the best team.
If you don't want to find the best team why not only allow the teams ranked 5-9 participate in the playoff and call them the National Champion?

That probably happens about 65% of the time. The system rewards the "most deserving", not the best. They usually go hand-in-hand, though.

I can't think of a year the BCS didn't get it right? Maybe LSU 2007? Just don't leave anything up for debate and win the SEC and you are in.
