There is a real world example of this right here in the U. S. Some western First American tribes refer to gay men in their societies as berdache, meaning two-spirit.

They are assigned roles as teachers of tribal children and live honored and full lives. Lesbians are not so lucky, however. Since women in general have a secondary status to men, they have to maintain that station within the tribe.
