I don't even think that's the issue here (forcing players to practice a certain religion I mean). I think the issue is just with the public institution putting religious imagery on the public property.

I am obviously not a lawyer though.

Obviously. It's just a matter of personal preference. You can't use the constitution to argue that it's illegal.

I'm also not a lawyer, but I do play one on TV, again I go back to the players likely having more of a say on whether or not the cross was on the helmet than the university. I'm sure the University had to approve it, but they certainly didn't come up with the idea.
