Agree. The existence of hate crimes only serves to divide and worsen race relations. See this thread for example...one instance isn't labeled a hate crime and one side is pissed off. If it's labeled a hate crime the other side is pissed off.

Just label it a crime and be done with it.

I think a while ago we had a shitstorm brewing in the white privilege thread because of this reason.

I agree with the sentiment, but some equality sure would be nice at this moment.

Privilege only extends so far.

1. I agree that the entire notion of hate crimes is ridiculous. For example, if somebody murders or beats another person, their crime isn't any more heinous because they did for racist reasons rather than for some other reason.

2. With that said, why would this be classified as a hate crime when you have black victims as well as white? When you reportedly had whites as well as blacks participating in the mob?
