Even if he asked for it after he committed as you say it still reflects poorly, maybe even more so. Not a good way to gain favor with your teammates requesting preferential treatment before you even enroll

Probably the first time they've ever had to deal with a player saying they wanted a particular number

how do you know it wasn't offered without him asking?

Has to be less difficult than having Your coach explain to your players that your QB tells you what he will and won't do.
