A lot of people get paid more than what they deserve and alot of people get paid less than what they deserve...
How much would most of you charge to shingle a roof on a house? Most of you would charge an outrageous fricking amount cause you don't want to do it.. it's hot, requires physical work, etc. How much should a fast food worker get paid...? well if they work hard and do their job... maybe 15 an hour... however, many of them are surrounded by people that don't work hard and don't do anything... so those that do work have to take up the slack for the lazy people, even though they don't get paid much more.
You joke about flipping burgers being a career... well.... it is a career in some ways in this day and age.... why don't you go start a small restaurant on your own and compete with all the big franchises. I dare you to open a small time hardware or grocery store in a town near a wal-mart, k-mart, home depot, or lowes... yet I bet you would say... working at wal-mart or lowes isn't a career choice.
There are a lot of lazy people out there... but there are also a lot of greedy people out there. There are also a lot of hard working people out there that don't get paid what they deserve.

In 2005, I left a larger company and started my own business. It's a service business and I started with 3 customers. I worked 2 part time jobs in addition to getting it off the ground. I still have one of those part time jobs, in addition to my business now, even though it's self sustaining. Why? Because, I'm taking advantage of the stock purchase plan and 401K that it has. I don't "need" it anymore, but it's been nice to have additional money to set back.
I don't bemoan anyone who gets out and works. Lord knows in this day and age it's tough out there. However, when you offer very little skills and do nothing to better one's self... I do have a problem when they start demanding more money, just because of "fairness" and "equality".
Want more? Get off your butts and PROVE why you're worth more. Do that little bit extra to show your boss that you will help the company grow more and earn more. Go to school at night, further your opportunities. Get a part time job.

Absolultely. And there's plenty of opportunity out there to leave a job where they can make it. And if they can't, the American dream can still be had. It's all depending on how smart and hard one wants to work, and if they're willing to risk it on their own initiative.
