I would argue, it's a recent phenomena. Progress throughout the 20th, 19th and 18th centuries for the most part, was made by individuals who were focused on improving themselves and families. Not based on getting what their neighbor had. It was born of a desire to improve the situation of their families and provide a better future for their children. Keeping up with the Joneses is more about, we gotta have a new gaming system, because Billy Bob just got a new one.
