The Perfect Playoff System

8 Team Playoff
Winners of Power Conference Championships
- ACC
- SEC
- Big10
- Big12
- Pac12
3 At Large Bids
- AT LEAST 2 teams from Non-Power Conferences (MEAC, AA, USA, Independents, Mid-American, Mountain West, Sun Belt)
The 3 At large could be rethought. I'd like to see some cinderella teams in football. Always makes the NCAA Tourney fun.

anytime you have an "at large" bid, there will be controversy

The At-large bids should cause controversy. That would make it interesting. However, having the automatics from the BCS conference winners will do away with rankings and biases (which will be where the screwups come from this year). If your team wins the conference, they are in.
There's always a few FCS teams that are pretty good each year. I doubt this year will be any different.

So let me guess your playoff scenario...
5 conference champions, 2 other SEC schools, and Alabama
Sound good to ya?

You guys might just get beat by an FCS team this weekend.
I'm not understanding the replies here? You dont think an FCS school can ever beat a top FBS school? Highly unlikely, but possible. May can reduce it to 1 team to give that level a chance.

did you really mean FCS or did you just mean non power 5 conference schools?
I could see the 5 PCChamps the top two at larges from those confrences and then 1 spot for the top non power five confrences and ND.

Yeah, I meant FBS Div II. Woops, now I see why I was getting the fricked up replies.
I'll edit the OP.

I agree with this part with 1 caveat...each conference champion must play in a conference championship game...thus the Big 12 would have to add a couple more teams. I think this would add to the intensity of the conference championships as they would add another level to the play-offs...
For the 3 at large, I'd have the 3 highest ranking champions from non-Big 5 conferences. This could be done via a specific poll or by selection committee. Only conference champions get in, so Notre Dame would have to join a conference to qualify...
Don't think it'll happen but that's how I'd do it...

Any "fair" playoff system would require re-aligning conferences and centralizing scheduling so that every team played roughly equivalent opposition. Then you you have the conference champions in the playoffs. And add some stupid "wild card" system like the pros.
Since the whole purpose of the playoff system is to add games and generate TV revenue, I expect we will see something like this soon. The recent move by the "Big 5" conferences is just the latest step into turning CFB into NFL Jr.
And it's a damned shame.

Notre Dame should go ahead and join the ACC in football as well, but they would lose a lot of money from TV rights.
And yes, the conferences will need a championship game. This is easily fixed with expansion. I wouldn't mind a 10 team conference as long as they had a championship game. I'd rather see at least 12 team conferences though.

I like 12 teams. 8 conference champs, plus 4 at large. Top 4 conference champs get a bye, then use BCS(or something) to seed rest 5-12(regardless of at large or not).
I think this allows the smaller conferences a chanc, plus keeps the regular season meaningful, because you want to finish in the top 4 for the bye. Games up to semi's played at the home of the higher seed.

This is solid and speaks to facts, I like the 3 At Large but somehow they need to be fact based choices, not opinions
