Don't take it the wrong way, it's not a slight to Saban. I feel like Saban likely made a decision try his hand at college and after winning at LSU, wanted to give the NFL a try. I don't think he didn't prepare enough, I just see him differently than someone like Sumlin, who as I understand it has had the NFL as his goal the entire time.

Perhaps Saban did too, I don't have that kind of insight, but to me it seemed more like a next step or looming challenge than his life's goal.

I didn't take it as a slight at all. (I am unusual for a Gump. )

I just think Saban's career has more NFL roots than someone like Spurrier, who I believe is an excellent example of your point. 3-4 years as a defensive coordinator (even at a shithole like the Browns) is a huge difference from having no experience at all.
