Yes, in fact the entire reason Texas declared independence from Mexico was because Mexico outlawed slavery in 1829. Before that, things were going swimmingly for the Texa----er, Tennesseeans.

Slavery was just one of the reasons.

A lot of it was political. For example, Texas was once a conjoined state with current Mexican state of Coahuila and the capital was Saltillo. A lot of Texans felt the capital was too far away and their interests were not properly represented. After Texas became it's own state within Mexico, Santa Ana centralized the government, and Texas declared independence.

Interesting side fact, the current Mexican states of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamailipas came together and declared independence from Mexico as the Republic of Rio Grande. They tried to mirror what Texas was doing but that only lasted about a year after its leaders where bribed and concessions were made. The U.S. could have possibly gone down south as far as the Sierra Madre Mountains had Texas openly supported the Rio Grande
