Tried this on the MSB, but might have better insight on the SECR..
I was driving home today from work and unfortunately found out that Finebaum is now syndicated in Atlanta.
There was a guy who called in talking about the history of the SEC and Florida State's bid for admission in 1990.
Does anyone know the back story here? He claimed FSU wanted to join the conference (which I knew) but ultimately decided they didn't want to because they feared playing Auburn/Florida and other SEC teams (which I did not know).
I've tried googling for some history but can't find anything. Anyone got knowledge on this ?

Bowden was a pussy:

quote:
Bobby Bowden knew best in the early 1990s when Florida State was being simultaneously courted by the SEC and the ACC. In fact, Bobby made a boxing analogy and compared the ACC to the tomato cans that the aging, overweight George Foreman was beating up on at the time in his quest to regain the heavyweight championship.
"I'm like George Foreman," Bowden said then. "I like to pick those unranked guys out and fight 'em. Ol' George is out there knocking out these no-names, but he'll be fighting for the heavyweight championship directly.
"Everybody just assumed ol' Bobby was raised in the heart of the SEC, so naturally he's going to want to jump right in. Maybe I know too much about the SEC to want to join up."

Looking back on it they would have still been extremely successful in the early years. Of course they'd have to play UF Bama and other SEC opponents, but now they get sweet opponents like Syracuse and Boston College.

They chose the path most traveled. Easy street. Wimped out big time.

Wanted first choices, wound up with third or fourth runner-ups.

Bowden held up the ACC and they agreed to giving FSU a larger stake of the money. He played hard ball with the SEC and the SEC said no, everyteam gets a the same share of the pot.
Bowden was an arse and they should have tossed him years before they did. He WAS FSU football; he built the program and then held it back. He is a prime example that a head coach should not have absolute power.
