I know you are, I just don't want the plantation narrative to go on unquestioned. I think it's completely false.

You should absolutely challenge the plantation narrative. I don't think there's sufficient proof either way. "Ole Mississippi" seems considerably more likely to me.

However, I think it's foolish to concentrate on the historical context (fact or fiction). The findings of the study determined that "Ole Miss" has positive meaning in the contemporary context. Some folks in the Ole Miss community took offense to Ole Miss even being considered, and created a much bigger problem with their backlash.

If everybody had read the study before reacting, then a bunch of a-hole journalists wouldn't have gone around spreading rumors as fact about Ole Miss and hurting our reputation.

The Plantation narrative was literally on the school website for YEARS. It wasn't just made up, it was in the about us section of the schools website. Some PR genius thought "hey this is dumb as frick" 3 years ago and they took it down. I remember it vividly.
